Accounting and Bookkeeping
After graduating from The University of Auckland, Bhavik came to us as one of our resident Accounting tutors where he amazes both his students and colleagues with his huge range of knowledge. Bhavik has been with us for two years and we’re still trying to find a topic that he’s not an expert in. So far we know he’s a pro at web development, IT, simulation racing, and guitar, so who knows what other talents he’s hiding from us.
While tutoring, Bhavik loves that every student is unique which means he can tailor his tutoring style to each one. He says its especially rewarding when he sees a less confident student develop over the course of their learning.
Imraan came to us straight from the Auckland University of Technology where he brings his passion for accounting to the students he tutors. He left us for awhile, but found that he couldn’t keep away and returned to The Career Academy to keep guiding students through their own accounting journeys. His favourite part of tutoring is the students enthusiasm.
Outside of teaching, Imraan can’t get enough of soccer – so we have to be careful not to say anything bad about Manchester United when he’s around. When he’s not on the field, his other goal is to complete his Chartered Accountancy exams.
Khajen came to The Career Academy as a temp doing data entry, but found the atmosphere so friendly that he couldn’t bring himself to leave and decided to tutor here as well. His education in Accounting and Finance at the University of Auckland holds him in good stead as he helps his students get the most out of their Accounting and Bookkeeping courses.
What Khajen loves most about tutoring is helping his students to bridge the gap between the theory and the practical fundamentals of accounting. ‘Accounting is systematic, everything flows and there’s always a right answer’ he says, and the moment where he sees students realise this and get it right is a reward in itself.
When he’s not crunching numbers with his students – Khajen loves to sink his teeth into a good book.
Blessing is obsessed with two things – tutoring accounting and watching movies. Sadly, the number of movies starring accountants is limited, so she can’t combine her two loves, but in the meantime she’s almost as happy giving her students as much encouragement and motivation as she can.
The study flexibility offered by The Career Academy also means that she is always available to help, which she thinks is invaluable when it comes to helping students navigate both studying and living their busy lives. She believes that education is the key to success, and applies this to each and every one of her students.
When there’s time between movies, Blessing loves exploring New Zealand on road trips with her friends.
Tracey is a people person with impressive juggling skills. Like many of The Career Academy’s students, she’s a working mum balancing her job and her family.
In her previous role as an office manager at one of Lion Nathan’s Auckland establishments for seven years, she was responsible for all manner of financial duties (incl. payroll, and accounts payable & receivable.) She later backed up these skills with a Bachelor of Business from Massey.
Although she’s a proficient “number cruncher” it’s working with her students which Tracey enjoys the most. Seeing when a student really “gets it,” when their confidence soars or when they’re able to secure that new role – these are things that she loves.
Matt’s Bachelor of Commerce (in accounting and commercial law) is well supported by his previous employment in mechanical engineering.
As one of our tutors, Matt relishes the hectic but friendly, focused but supportive atmosphere at The Career Academy. “It’s a great place to gain new, marketable skills, and there’s a dedicated crew of enthusiastic tutors to support and guide you every step of the way.” He also appreciates sharing ideas with and gaining fresh perspectives from his colleagues and students.
When his working day is done, Matt enjoys beating his older brother at table tennis. He’s also in a 5-a-side indoor football team, and is an avid supporter of Arsenal FC. Matt likes doodling on the guitar; Stevie Ray Vaughan is his favourite guitarist.
Animal and Pet Care
Katie studied the Bachelor of Veterinary Science at university, covering all aspects of animal knowledge from basic animal care, to surgery and training ranging from farm animals to exotic pets. She has had experience in veterinary clinics of all types and has volunteered with a range of animal charities including de-sexing stray dogs in Samoa.
Katie’s pride and joy are her two dogs Oggy and Merlin. She enjoys oil-painting, playing the piano, sewing clothes, reading and playing sports. Katie finds her work at The Career Academy rewarding and enjoys giving feedback and supporting students. Katie enjoys learning from the students as the students learn for themselves.
Eden loves animals, and thought that The Career Academy would be the perfect place to help others grow their passion for animals as well. During her study at Unitec – Eden spent some time studying the fascinating behaviour of the baboons at Auckland Zoo. Fortunately, the other tutors at The Career Academy are both friendlier and better behaved, and she loves the community spirit around the office.
Of course, it’s the students that make it worth getting up in the morning. ‘It’s awesome when students add their own experiences to their assignments,’ and she especially loves to hear the stories about people’s pets.
When the last assignment is marked, Eden relaxes with horse riding and reading (but thankfully not at the same time).
Psychology and Counselling
Tamara joined the Career Academy as a Psychology and Counselling tutor as she has always enjoyed helping people to achieve their goals.
She says, “the best part of being a tutor is hearing how excited students are when they receive their certificate of completion, and offering them support throughout their studies”.
Tamara is originally from England, but moved to New Zealand six years ago with her family. She has a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Auckland, double majoring in Psychology and Neuroscience; and she is planning on pursuing her PhD in Clinical Psychology. Tamara loves to socialise with friends and spend time with her family. She spent 2014 travelling around Europe, and since then has fallen in love cooking European cuisine.
Bess came to us after studying at the Auckland University of Technology. Now, she helps The Career Academy’s students get the most out of their Psychology courses. Nothing is more rewarding for Bess than when she sees students getting excited about their course, and finds tutoring is a great way to get insights into the lives of her students.
Bess is thinking about extending her tutoring experience and going back to study to become a primary school teacher, where she’d trade her students for ones who are a little younger.
Outside of psychology, Bess spends her free time at the gym, getting stuck-in with classes that get the rest of The Career Academy office sweating from just thinking about.
Management, Medical Administration and Nutrition
Dinithi spent 10 years studying in an International School in Thailand, where she got an incredible education, and almost as importantly, an incomparable knowledge of where to find the best street food. After trading Bangkok for Auckland she joined us at The Career Academy offices where she brings her considerable experience to tutoring Administration and Management. Dinithi just completed her masters degree.
She loves seeing students gain confidence as they master new skills and abilities, especially when they’re re-entering the workforce after a break. She also gets excited when the most passionate students get involved on the forums and help one another learn.
When Dinithi isn’t tutoring she is a huge foodie, and alternates her time between eating gourmet and hitting a ball around on the tennis court.
Venshly is our resident Medical and Nutrition Teacher. She got her start studying Chemistry, but finding that she didn’t have any chemistry with the subject, she switched to studying Nutrition and found it more to her taste. Now she studies Nursing and hopes to combine it with her prior study to become a Nurse Practitioner. These skills hold her in good stead when she’s passing course knowledge onto her students, and lives for the days when a student understands the content so well that they turn in a flawless assignment.
Venshly is also passionate about powerlifting, Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts, and is The Career Academy’s jack-of-all-trades – being very capable of both putting people into hospital as well as using nursing to help them out of it.
When you get in touch with us, it’s our course advisors who will be on the other end of the line. Every one of them is a pro at looking at your needs and strengths, and then finding the course that is the perfect fit for you.
Sala manages and oversees our Course Advisors and has her second full-time job is being a mum. She believes the key to putting students into the perfect course is to relate to students needs, understand where they’re coming from and find out where they want to go. Despite having a lot of plates to spin, Sala enjoys her work due to the everyday work challenge and helping students to achieve their career goals.
Jess came to us from the UK and leads our team of course advisors from the front lines. Jess says it’s The Career Academy’s friendly and relaxing atmosphere that gets her into the office every morning (although the bus also helps). Her favorite part of being a Course Advisor is guiding students into a course that will help them in their life or career, and says it makes her day when she knows that she is helping make a student’s dreams come true.
When she’s out of the office, Jess likes to make the most of living in New Zealand by getting out and exploring the beautiful scenery.
Apar is one of our resident course gurus, and while one day there might be a course he doesn’t know inside and out, it hasn’t been created yet. This gives him the uncanny ability to guide students to the right path and help them find the course that is perfect for them.
He especially likes to see students getting excited about the interactive exercises and quizzes in their course, and thinks that these unique learning options are what makes our students love learning with us.
Marco formerly played professional basketball for New Zealand, which took him all around the world. After that, he limited himself to a slightly smaller geographical area when working as a real estate agent. While Marco isn’t a tutor since we don’t offer courses in basketball or selling houses, he finds that putting a student in a course which fits them like a glove (or a basketball shoe) is just as satisfying.
According to Marco – The Career Academy’s friendly environment is what makes it so unique. Seeing staff and students alike excited about taking the next steps in their career or lives is what makes all the difference. In his free time Marco enjoys embarrassing his friends when they try to play basketball against him.
Thomas loves to see the enthusiasm that students have when they’re enrolling in a course. ‘They’re happy to be learning and taking the next step’ he says, and we think that this makes a huge difference when it comes to succeeding in their course.
While you wouldn’t think that advising students taking their next step in their education and flying through the air on a motorbike would come in the same package – Thomas is living proof that you’d be wrong. Although he freely admits that he’s pretty lucky to be living proof at all – he once spent a month bedridden with a broken ribcage after a motorbike crash.
While Ash’s official title is ‘Course Advisor,’ a big part of his day-to-day is being a little bit of a fortune teller. When students call him up, it’s Ash’s job to help them see all the potential futures available to them if they enrol. He’s also happy to report that their futures are looking bright. The thing he likes most about The Career Academy is that every single member of the team is pulling together to make sure that our students have the best education experience they can possibly have. When Ash is away from his crystal ball, he tries to keep himself busy by hitting the gym.
If you ever feel like you need a little bit of extra help, Student Services will be your first port of call. They’ll give you all the help you need to make it through your course with flying colours, whether it be a little extra time to complete assignments, or a little more attention from your tutors.
Grace is all about the personal touch, and having previously come from a call centre, she loves that she has been able to throw away the script and make the help she gives students as unique as they are. Grace says that her job is to make students feel as if they’re always supported. Studying can be daunting, especially when students live busy lives of their own, but Grace helps remind students that they’re up to the challenge.
While we like to say that helping students is all the nourishment our Student Services need – Grace disagrees, and so she’s a bit of a foodie in her spare time.
Jason came to The Career Academy from the cutthroat world of hospitality, where he worked for a time at Orbit – the rotating restaurant at the top of Auckland’s Sky Tower. This taught him a very important lesson that he passes onto students who are having a difficult time – no matter how things look at the moment, something new is always going to come around. It’s these and other lessons that make Jason the Master of Motivation, which is also why he is so good at keeping up with going to the gym.
Alisi is the name on her birth certificate, but we all know her as Baba. She studied communications at AUT and originally wanted to go into journalism, but decided that using her communications skills to help The Career Academy’s students succeed was a better use of her skills.
Baba understands that sometimes life gets in the way, so she makes an extra effort to help facilitate those students who find it a little more difficult to fit their study into their life. When she’s not in the office, you’ll find Baba watching Netflix.
