ANCN1001 – Certificate in Caring for Dogs
Learn about the psychology of animals
Understand animals and what causes them to act the way they do. You’ll gain a sound foundation for dealing with animals in any situation and be able to put them at ease. Ideal for pet owners, breeders and pet shop staff, through to animal welfare officers, zoo workers and carers. Perfect if you want to start a business doing animal training, grooming or dog walking, or if you would like to volunteer at an animal shelter.
All courses include:
- Describe the health requirements for your dog including nutrition, exercise and hygiene.
- Explain the anatomical structure of the dog.
- Understand the common health problems in dogs and their treatments.
- Identify the dog breeds available.
- Explain the breeding process.
- Be able to provide practical training for your dog.
- Explain the importance of dog grooming.
- Determine other requirements for your dog including professional dog handling services and day care services.

Meet your course tutor
Katie Fasher studied the Bachelor of Veterinary Science at university, covering all aspects of animal knowledge from basic animal care, to surgery and training ranging from farm animals to exotic pets. She has had experience in veterinary clinics of all types and has volunteered with a range of animal charities including de-sexing stray dogs in Samoa.
Katie’s pride and joy are her two dogs Oggy and Merlin. She enjoys oil-painting, playing the piano, sewing clothes, reading and playing sports. Katie finds her work at The Career Academy rewarding and enjoys giving feedback and supporting students. Katie enjoys learning from the students as the students learn for themselves.
